he V&A’s mammoth display about Alice in Wonderland was thanks to open right before the pandemic, but it’s all the much better for a bit of delayed gratification. The only rabbit hole most of us have been down is how to make the fantastic sourdough, so it feels genuinely superior for the soul to wander around an exhibition which is an unapologetic celebration of mind-growing curiosity. Alice, the Mad Hatter and the Cheshire Cat are imprinted in our minds, but most of us try to remember the Disney-ified version of Alice in Wonderland – Mary Blair’s illustrations are legendary, but they are a little bit male gazey. Her Alice was all broad eyes and flowing blonde locks, while the source material is an altogether stranger affair. (Re-examining it at uni, I bear in mind pondering, “This e-book is weeeeird.”)
