You don’t have to wait in line for hours to cross the toll plaza. This day of traffic and suffering around the toll plaza is coming to an end. Union Minister for Road Transport and Small and Medium Industries Nitin Gadkari today said that the government has taken a final plan to collect tolls through GPS (Global Positioning System) based technology to ensure smooth movement of vehicles across the country.

The Union Road Transport Minister said the technology would ensure that India free toll booths within the next two years. Explaining how this would work, Gadkari said the amount of toll would be deducted directly from the bank account based on the movement of vehicles.

He also said that now all commercial vehicles are coming with vehicle tracking system. However, there is no such advantage in old cars. So the government will come up with some plans to install GPS technology in these cars.

Gadkari hopes that the toll collection could reach Rs 34,500 crore by March. And through the use of GPS technology for toll collection, the toll revenue will be Rs 1,34,000 crore in the next five years.

In his speech at the ASSOCHAM Foundation Week Program, Gadkari highlighted the need for industrial development to alleviate employment and poverty in India. In this context, he said, decentralization of industry is also essential to increase the growth rate in India as industry is concentrated only in urban areas. Because increasing urbanization is causing serious problems in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and other cities. He also expressed the need to increase public-private investment or public-private investment in infrastructural development.
