Legendary Indian classical musician and Padma Vibhushan awardee Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan handed away on January 17, 2021. He was 89. Veteran singer Lata Mangeshkar remembering the departed soul shared, “Mujhe abhi abhi ye dukhad khabar mili hai ki mahan shastriya gayak Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan Saheb is duniya mein nahi rahe. Ye sunke mujhe bahut dukh hua. Wo gayak to acche the hee par insaaan bhi bahut acche the.”

Shelling out tribute to Khan, Lata further shared that she experienced learnt new music from him and his death is a massive loss for the tunes sector. “Meri bhanji ne bhi Khan sahab se sangeet sikha hai, maine bhi unse thoda sangeet sikha tha. Unke jaane se sangeet ki bahut haani hui hai. Main unko vinamra shraddhanjali arpan karti hun,” she tweeted.

Khan was awarded the Padma Shri (1991), Padma Bhushan (2006) and Padma Vibhushan (2018). He was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award(2003), the best Indian recognition given to practising artistes by the Sangeet Natak Akademi, India’s Countrywide Academy for Tunes, Dance and Drama.

The late musician has even lent his voice to Mrinal Sen’s Bhuvan Shome (1969). He also gave playbacks for movies like Umrao Jaan, Badnaam Basti and Shreemaan Aashique to name a several. He has even composed audio for Aagaman (1982).
