Golden Globes nominations 2021: British talent leads charge

The nominations were announced in a virtual ceremony hosted by actresses Sarah Jessica Parker and Taraji P Henson.

The awards show, set to take pace on February 28, honours the best in TV and film. It is hosted by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

Edgar-Jones received a nod for actress in a limited series or TV film for her role in Normal People – the hit adaptation of the Sally Rooney book.

In the same category, Cate Blanchett was nominated for Mrs. America, Shira Haas for Unorthodox, Nicole Kidman for The Undoing and Anya Taylor-Joy for The Queen’s Gambit.

Ahmed was nominated in the actor in a drama category for his film Sound of Metal, with Anthony Hopkins nominated for The Father and Gary Oldman for Mank.

Olivia Colman has been nominated for her role in Neflix’s The Crown.

Carey Mulligan was nominated for her leading role in revenge thriller Promising Young Woman, and Vanessa Kirby for playing a grieving mother in Pieces of a Woman.

The late Chadwick Boseman was nominated for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and Tahar Rahim for The Mauritanian.

British stars Corrin and Colman were both nominated for actress in a TV drama for The Crown, with Jodie Comer nominated for Killing Eve, Laura Linney for Ozark and Sarah Paulson for Ratched.

For actor in a TV drama, Josh O’Connor was nominated for The Crown, Jason Bateman for Ozark, Bob Odenkirk for Better Call Saul, Al Pacino for Hunters and Matthew Rhys for Perry Mason.

The nominees in the best director for a motion picture will see British writer Emerald Fennell (Promising Young Woman), David Fincher (Mank) and Regina King (One Night in Miama) all compete for the accolade – Fennell, who is best known for her role as Camilla Parker-Bowles in The Crown, also wrote her film’s script.

They are joined by Aaron Sorkin (The Trial of the Chicago 7) and Chloe Zhao (Nomadland).

In best TV musical or comedy, nominations included Emily in Paris, The Flight Attendant, Schitt’s Creek, The Great, Ted Lasso.

Sacha Baron Cohen’s performance in Borat Subsequent Moviefilm saw him nominated for actor in a musical or comedy and his co-star Maria Baklakova for best actress in the same section. Baron Cohen was also nominated for Supporting Film Actor for The Trial of the Chicago 7.

Baron Cohen celebrated both nominations.

He wrote on Twitter: “I’m overwhelmed and humbled that the Hollywood Foreign Press has recognized both THE TRIAL OF THE CHICAGO 7 and BORAT SUBSEQUENT MOVIEFILM. These nominations are a tribute to the talented creative teams that led and supported both films from inception to this moment.

“I especially want to congratulate the visionary of CHICAGO 7, Aaron Sorkin, and BORAT’s Tutar, the incredible Maria Bakalova. These two films are different, but they share a common theme — sometimes we have to protest injustice with our own farce.

“Thank you to the HFPA for this ridiculous amount of nominations. I’m so honoured — and in the event that we don’t win, I promise to hire Rudy Giuliani to contest the results.”

James Corden is also nominated in the best actor in a musical comedy category for The Prom, while Hugh Grant’s performance in The Undoing saw him nominated for actor in a limited series or TV Film.

In all, Netflix dominated the nominees as Mank and The Crown lead with six nominations a piece. The Crown creator Peter Morgan said: “All of us on The Crown are thrilled to be recognised in this way by the HFPA. This season really seems to have resonated with audiences of all generations all around the world, and we could not be more grateful or more proud.”

US actress Jane Fonda will be honoured with a lifetime achievement award at this month’s Golden Globes. The HFPA said she would be given the Cecil B deMille Award at the annual ceremony in Beverly Hills, California, on 28 February.

“Her undeniable talent has gained her the highest level of recognition,” said the HFPA.

“While her professional life has taken many turns, her unwavering commitment to evoking change has remained.”

The 78th Golden Globes will be broadcast from New York and Los Angeles for the first time, with comedians Tina Fey and Amy Poehler splitting the bi-coastal hosting duties.

Fey will be live from Rockefeller Centre in Manhattan, while Poehler will present from the ceremony’s usual home of the Beverly Hilton Hotel in California on February 28.

Last year was a successful night for British talent at the 77th Golden Globes – with Phoebe Waller-Bridge picking up the award for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy for Fleabag.

The show was also named as the Best TV Comedy.

Colman, who also had a guest role in Fleabag, was crowned Best Actress in a TV Drama for her role as Queen Elizabeth II in Netflix’s The Crown.

British director Sam Mendes – who was behind WWI epic 1917 – picked up the award for best director, beating the likes of Quentin Tarantino and Martin Scorsese, and the film being named Best Drama.

Sir Elton John and his longtime collaborator Bernie Taupin received the Golden Globe for Best Original Song for I’m Gonna Love Me Again, which features in the biopic Rocketman.

Taron Egerton, who played the singer in Rocketman, was named Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy for his performance.

HBO and Sky Atlantic’s Succession – written by Brit Jesse Armstrong – was the winner in the Best TV Drama category, beating the likes of Big Little Lies, The Morning Show, The Crown and Killing Eve.

Brian Cox, who plays patriarch Logan Roy in the family drama, was also crowned Best Actor in a TV Drama.
