Laura Mvula - Pink Noise review: 80s-inspired, but excitingly new
W

e really should have seen this coming when Laura Mvula started off wielding a critical-tar at her gigs a several yrs ago. The hybrid instrument is a gateway drug to all matters Eighties, from which it is only a small phase to setting up shoulder pads and fancying Emilio Estevez. The Birmingham musician’s third album is a Dayglo fiesta of elastic analogue synths, plastic horn stabs and daring funk basslines.

Adore for that ten years, at the time musically derided, has been in trend for a though of course. The Weeknd’s Blinding Lights, which mainlines the sonic flourishes of the Eighties, was the UK’s most important offering solitary in 2020. You could just about trick a time traveller into believing that Dua Lipa’s Future Nostalgia album was the hottest from Olivia Newton-John. But Mvula, born in 1986, seemed a much less very likely applicant to join in.

When she arrived with her complex debut album, Sing to the Moon, in 2013, its jazzy and orchestral touches acquired the initial of two Mercury Prize nominations and frequent comparisons to Nina Simone. That a person and its abide by-up, The Dreaming Room, ended up severe, elaborate functions, not the forms to attribute snappy hit singles. As she was classically experienced at the Birmingham Conservatoire, it appeared underambitious to be expecting them. However becoming major adequate to headline at the Albert Hall and Somerset House was not satisfactory for her major label backers, Sony, without the need of accompanying impressive gross sales figures, and they dropped her with a curt email in 2017.

Unusually, rather than carrying on independently, she’s been picked up by one more massive business, Atlantic. Her ongoing ambition exhibits in audio that seems created to fill the major areas. The discouraged lyrics of Church Woman – “How can you dance with the satan on your back?” – are tempered by shiny synth chimes. Treatment mixes far more grand keyboard strains with clipped funk guitar and triumphant trumpets. Even Simon Neil of Scottish rockers Biffy Clyro gets immersed, supplying nearly unrecognisably airbrushed vocals on the easy duet What Issues.

It’s certainly considerably additional fun than previous work, but she has not dumbed down. Of course, there’s an evident pop one: Acquired Me, which is wonderful, nevertheless it may have experienced a much better chance of getting a hit for Billy Ocean in 1986 than cracking the top rated 40 these days. But her attribute multi-layered, overlapping vocals are even now listed here, and creating music like this that doesn’t seem like pastiche is easier stated than carried out. It is an outdated fashion but also an interesting new commence.
