Ryder Cup 2021 LIVE! Day 1 stream, results, latest score updates

Three years of waiting are over and a golf event that captures the sporting world like no other is ready to get underway as USA host Europe at Whistling Straits in the 43rd Ryder Cup.

Thursday night’s opening ceremony saw European captain Padraig Harrington and an emotional Steve Stricker introduce their teams to the Wisconsin crowd, while paying tribute to all those who have made the event possible after its 12-month Covid delay.

At the end of the ceremony, the two skippers revealed their chosen pairings for today’s opening foursomes and the opener looks a thriller as Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth – superb in America’s defeat at Le Golf National three years ago – take on the Spanish duo of Jon Rahm and Sergio Garcia.

Open champion Collin Morikawa teams up with Dustin Johnson against European rookie Viktor Hovland and Paul Casey, before Brooks Koepka and Daniel Berger meet Englishmen Lee Westwood and Matt Fitzpatrick.

The opening session of the day concludes with a mouthwatering clash that pits Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay against Rory McIlroy and Ian Poulter.

Whistling Straits: The key holes

Terry Munday, caddy to Ian Poulter, tells us where the cup could be won and lost…

A blind landing area off the tee can make shot selection difficult and there’s bunkers everywhere surrounding the fairway on this par four. The way the wind has been so far, that could be a big factor — it’s very open to Lake Michigan — and there is a big drop-off area for any wayward shots. Birdies are possible but so too bogeys and double bogeys — just about anything really.

It is still very early in the morning in Wisconsin – just gone 5:30am, in fact – but we’ve just had our first sighting of players arriving at the course.

Patrick Cantlay and Rory McIlroy, who will face each other in the last of the morning’s foursomes, are both in the house.

Whistling Straits: The key holes

This is one of the holes where I genuinely think you could see any score come up during the three days of play. It’s the longest hole on the course and you can either go aggressively and attempt the green in two or else play it safe and lay up. The danger is the water to the left but also the bunkers if you come up short. Here, it could swing early momentum in any of the matches.

Ryder Cup format

The Ryder Cup is a match-play competition, with a total of 28 matches – split into three different formats – played across the three days.

On Friday and Saturday, players play in pairs, with four foursomes and four fourballs matches on each day, meaning only eight players on each team participate in each session. On the Sunday, all 12 players from each team play in a singles match.

The victors of each match claim a point for their team, while the point is halved if the match ends all-square. Should the two teams finish level on 14 points each at the end of the weekend, Europe – as defending champions – would retain the Ryder Cup.
