Contemporary Indian dancer and choreographer Astad Deboo breathed his last on December 10. He was 73. According to the dance pioneer’s relatives, Astad breathed his last in his Mumbai residence immediately after a temporary sickness. Astad was recognized for combining Kathak and Kathakali and thus building a unique fusion dance form.
The Indian governing administration had awarded him the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1996 and Padma Shri in 2007. Astad also choreographed for a handful of Hindi movies. He experienced even choreographed famous painter M F Hussain’s directorial ‘Meenaxi: A Tale of 3 Cities’ (2004) which starred Tabu and Kunal Kapoor in the guide.
Sharing the news of Astad’s demise his family released a statement that reads, “We are sad to announce the passing absent of Astad Deboo. He still left us in the early hours of December 10, at his household in Mumbai, immediately after a brief disease, bravely borne. He leaves behind a formidable legacy of unforgettable performances mixed with an unswerving commitment to his artwork, matched only by his massive, loving heart that received him thousands of good friends and a extensive, number of admirers.
